Is Mauritius Good for Golf?

An honest assessment from 20+ years of golf travel

Ask Paul About Mauritius

Yes — and it is not a close call. Mauritius is one of the finest golf destinations in the Indian Ocean, with courses designed by some of the biggest names in golf architecture.

Bernhard Langer, Ernie Els, Peter Matkovich, and Louis Oosthuizen have all shaped layouts here. The island has hosted the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open on the DP World Tour multiple times.

This page covers why Mauritius works so well for golfers, what the best time to visit is, and who it suits most. For a full breakdown of the individual courses, see our Mauritius golf courses guide.

The Courses

Mauritius has over a dozen golf courses packed into an island roughly the size of greater Perth. Most are built within five-star resort properties, which means the standard of every surrounding touchpoint matches the quality of the golf itself.

The standout layouts are Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club, Anahita Golf Club, Heritage Le Chateau, and Mont Choisy Le Golf. Each offers a genuinely different experience in terms of terrain, setting, and design character.

Ile aux Cerfs sits on its own offshore island, accessible by boat, with the Indian Ocean visible from nearly every hole. Heritage Le Chateau is the most demanding layout on the island and the one that has held up to DP World Tour scrutiny.

When to Play: Weather and Course Conditions

May to October is the best window for golf in Mauritius. This is the dry season, with average temperatures sitting between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius and very little rainfall.

The courses are at peak condition during this period. Trade winds keep the humidity comfortable, and you can expect consistent playing conditions across a full week.

November to April is the wet season, bringing higher humidity, occasional heavy rain, and a small risk of cyclone activity between January and March. Golf is still playable, but conditions are less predictable.

For Australian golfers, the May to October window aligns well with the Australian winter — a strong reason to head to Mauritius when the weather at home is at its worst.

Beyond the Fairways

Mauritius is one of the few golf destinations where non-golfers are genuinely equally well catered for. The five-star resorts offer snorkelling, sailing, spa facilities, and beaches that are among the best in the Indian Ocean.

The cuisine is exceptional. Mauritius blends Indian, African, French, and Chinese culinary influences into something you will not find anywhere else. Every evening off the course is worth looking forward to.

This makes Mauritius a strong choice for couples where one golfer and one non-golfer are travelling together. Both will have more than enough to keep them occupied.

Who is Mauritius Golf Best Suited For?

Mauritius suits experienced golfers who want a premium experience rather than a high-volume trip. The courses cater to all handicap levels — most have multiple tee options — but the destination itself appeals most to those who want quality over quantity.

It is also well suited to golfer-and-partner trips. The resort quality means a non-golfing partner will not be sitting around waiting for you to finish your round.

Group tours work very well here too. Paul runs escorted tours to Mauritius as part of the Golf Corner tour program, handling all logistics so groups can focus on the golf and the experience.

I include Mauritius in the Golf Corner program because it is one of the few destinations that delivers on every level. The courses are genuinely world-class, the resorts are exceptional, and every group I have taken there has come back wanting to go again.

Ile aux Cerfs in particular is a round I recommend to every golfer who asks me about the Indian Ocean. There is nothing else quite like it. Get in touch and I will walk you through what a Mauritius tour itinerary looks like.
